And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
By Pastor Ayo Agbelusi
Memorise: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16).
Read: John 21: 1-7
There’s no benefit in backsliding. The simple effect of backsliding is reproach and failure. It’s simple channel for the devil to revenge and drag a soul to hell eternally. “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62). What qualifies you for all you are enjoying at the moment is grace but backsliding can erode all that if care is not taken! Watch your ways!
Where we read in John 21: 1-7, the failure which was once aborted by our Lord Jesus Christ returned to the life of Peter because he considered going back to fishing more profitable than the calling and assignment of heaven. Maybe you heart is equally drifting back or your old friends are beckoning on you. It’s possible you just relocated to another city and you have started living freely without caution. Be careful not to get your soul entangled again to failure and immoral living.
In Luke 5: 5, Peter toiled all night but failed professionally until Jesus came to the scene. It was the miracle of Jesus that translated him from ordinary fisherman to a fisher of men! What a glorious development and promotion! But look at it, after the death of Jesus, he was already on his way back to his former vomit. It’s always very painful to see believers returning to their former lives after they have enjoyed the works and benefits of grace.
Beloved, your yesterday is too small compared to what the future holds for you. Why should you be thinking of returning to your vomit? You have promised to serve the Lord with all your spirit, soul and body. I encourage you to continue fervently in the Lord without looking back. Note this, the enemy of your soul – satan and his demonic angels will never give up on you. That’s why you shouldn’t give up on God!
What you will gain in backsliding is the lost of the present glory and a return to your former failures. Your old friends can never be substitutes to grace and the works of the Holy Spirit. You will be doing yourself more harm by returning to same group of drunkards and fornicators who initially led you into destruction. Thank God for the shed blood of Jesus. Now you are made fat and flourishing. It’s just too late to consider immorality as enjoyment and iniquities as pleasures!
2Pet.2:21 says: “For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.” If backsliding is a choice, then failure and shame will be inevitable. Be careful of the life you lead.
Let it not be said that your soul is beginning to crave those former lifestyles and worldly affairs. Keep moving on, don’t get yourself entangled again with sins and worldly lusts. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16).
Peter failed again at backsliding. He toiled in futility with no result until Jesus delivered him. Maybe you have started to fail again as a result of looking back. The wife of Lot couldn’t see the light of another day because she looked back. You can return to holy living, evangelism, prayers and the study of the word of the Lord. The Lord will keep you from falling and make His face to shine upon you.
Father, please keep my soul from backsliding and preserve me till second appearing of Your Son – Jesus

MEMORIZE: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matt. 24:42).
READ: Matthew 24:36-42
“Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit” (Eccl. 7:8).
This scripture is true of believers: Why? They started as sinners and ended as saints. And Isaiah 3:10 says it shall be well with the righteous. Are you a believer in Christ living daily before God in righteousness? Fear Not! It shall be well with you. It does not matter how seemingly bad things may appear today, your end shall be great. On the other hand, this scripture does not hold true for unbelievers because they started as innocent babies but ending as hardened sinners. For sinners, things shall continue to get worse. Believers will be spared the trouble of going through the Great Tribulation as they will be caught up to meet the Saviour in the air.
Today’s reading says it can be compared to the days of Noah. No drop of rain fell until Noah entered the ark. But immediately after Noah’s family and the selected animals were safe in the ark, Heaven released rain and the depth released the waters. While the inhabitants of the earth were being drowned one after the other, nothing happened to those within the ark. No sinner can survive or escape God’s judgement because God knows how to preserve the sinner to go through the judgement that has been prepared for them (2 Peter 2:9). Are you sinning but have not been caught or punished? It is not because you are smart. You are not. You cannot escape the judgement except you enter into Jesus Christ – God’s Ark of salvation, become born again and live right.
Moreover, although Jesus Christ is coming for the church – all those who are saved and washed in His blood, not all ‘Christians’ will go with Him. Why? Not everyone is born again. Of those that are born again, not every one of them is living holy. Unholy believers will be left at rapture to pass through the Great Tribulation for three and a half years. That will be another chance to live right but that will be too costly. It will cost them everything – their lives, property, profession, assets, or family. The lives they could not fully yield to Christ before the rapture will now be lost to the Antichrist. They will never be at peace as they will go out of circulation to live and worship God secretly under a world-wide antichrist regime. Now that you have the opportunity, why not make yourself fully ready? Are you ready for His coming?
Father, help me to be ever ready for your coming. Help me not to be taken unawares.
