Open Heavens Devotional: SMYRNA LIVES AGAIN Monday 14 February 2011 #RCCG

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.” (Micah 7:8)

READ: Revelation 2 :8-11

Of the seven churches the Lord wrote letters to, only two passed His assessment. The church at Smyrna was one of them. The Lord had nothing against them. May the Lord help you to a point where He will find nothing against you. A look at the history of Smyrna shows that it was founded, then destroyed, then rebuilt. The new rebuilt city was extremely beautiful. One of the finest of all Asian cities then, it was referred to as the ‘ ornament’, ‘crown’ or ‘flower’ of Asia. One of its streets was called ‘street of gold’. It proudly harboured a stadium, a public library and a home of music. Several idols such as Zeus, Apollo and Aphrodite had their temples there. Smyrna was a trading city and there were several influential Jews there. This magnificent city was really a beehive of activities. In His letter, the Lord introduced Himself as the One who was dead but is now alive. To any resident of Smyrna, this statement was something they could relate with, as Smyrna was once dead but then lived again. This speaks of capacity to bounce back after a fall. If a city was destroyed and after 300 years it bounced back formidably to the extent of becoming the envy of other cities of Asia, you too can bounce back from your backslidden state and overtake those ahead of you. This tells us that a fall is not final until the fallen accepts defeat. Has the devil struck you down and you are flat on the floor? Never accept defeat! You are down but not out!

“Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me” (Micah 7 :8). The power to bounce back is present in Christ. Peter fell to a point of denying Christ thrice but afterwards, he keyed into this grace and he bounced back. Are you a fallen soldier of the cross? Don’t stay down: Arise in the strength of Christ. You fall to rise, not rise to fall or stay fallen. No matter how badly you have fallen, you are bouncing back strong. That you fell does not mean you cannot be a winner or an ‘ overcomer’. Virtually everyone who overcame or won once experienced a fall or decline. Get up! Stand up! Take your rightful place now. The power of the Lord is right behind you.

PRAYER POINT: Pray that God will revive weak believers and restore backsliders in our churches.

Open Heavens Devotional: WHERE’S YOUR SPIKENARD? Sunday 13 February 2011 #RCCG

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “Verily I say unto you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her” (Mrk. 14 :9).

READ: Mark 14 :3-9

One way of knowing that your time of favour has come is when God gives you unusual opportunities. For King Solomon, God gave him the unusual opportunity to ask for whatever he wanted in a dream. “In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee” (2 Chron. 1 :7). However, that opportunity did not just come on its own. It was provoked by Solomon’s sacrifice of a thousand burnt offerings in one night. This simply tells us that there are things you can do to hasten or provoke your day of favour. Giving extraordinarily can trigger your favour. Unfortunately, many who are asking God for their day of favour are still holding back. Do you know that if Solomon had not given that landmark offering, he would not have accessed the wisdom that made him the wisest man on earth? Sometimes, God folds his hands and observes how far you can go for Him. He wants to see the extent of your love. He wants to see the level of risk you can take for Him. Have you given him that landmark gift that provokes an open cheque? Looking at the life of Solomon, you would discover that the wealth that followed his gift cannot be compared to what he gave. He never became poor all his life. He rather became the wealthiest man of his time—comparable with the billionaires of our time. You cannot lose out when you give to God. Do not deny yourself the opportunity of a life time!

In Mark 14 :3-9 , the Lord was taking a meal in Simon’s house when a woman came in. Before then, she had thought of how to make a lasting, positive impression on the Lord. Then, she remembered her expensive box of ointment. ‘Yes! The Lord deserves my best!’ she said to herself, and took the box with her. God only knows how long she had kept that treasure. When she got to the Lord, she opened it and anointed Him. On realizing the value of that perfume, some people around became angry. To them it was a waste of money anointing the Lord with such expensive oil. Unknown to her, she had keyed into prophetic declaration concerning the death and burial of the Lord. As a result, her name and deeds were etched in gold in the heavenly Hall of fame. Thousands of years later, her gift is still speaking for her. When we get to Heaven, we will see her. Are you still hiding your box of spikenard?

ACTION POINT Give God your best.

Open Heavens Devotional: HEIGHTS, SIGHT AND POSSESSIONS Saturday 12 February 2011

MEMORIZE: “For all the land which thou seest , to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” (Gen. 13:15).

READ: Genesis 13 :14-15

Perception is necessary for discovery and recovery. What you see determines what you get. If you cannot ‘see’ divine healing in the Bible, but just read about it, you may never experience it. So many believers have heard of divine healing but very few have experienced it because they cannot ‘see’ the true picture as presented in God’s Word. In Genesis 13:14-15, God told Abraham to take the look of his life; just one look and whatever he saw became his. If you were asked to take that one life-changing look, what will you do? You would climb to a very high mount, get a vantage point that guarantees the best view, before you take that look. If you were on a mountain top, you would have a great view and as a result greater possessions than if you were in a valley. In the same way, your spiritual level determines how much you can benefit from God’s Kingdom.

Whenever you are spiritually high, you will be able to derive greater understanding and revelations from the Bible than when you are in the valley of sin. Any time you are in sin, you are ‘down’. Do all you can to remain on the mountain top of God’s presence! The extent of your vision is the limit of your possession. You cannot possess what you cannot see. Anything the eye of your spirit-man can envision, God will deliver into your hands. In Exodus 2 :2 , Jochebed saw something in Moses that other people could not see. While other Hebrew women were seeing their new born baby-boys as dead, Jochebed saw her baby boy as alive, contrary to the king’s verdict. She simply made an exception for her baby. She said, ‘All other Hebrew male children may die but my baby boy will live’, and it was so. Today, because of the economic down turn, many people are seeing death in their businesses. But the ‘overcomers’ see life. In the face of an epidemic, what are you seeing: life or death? You can only get what you see. Like Jochebed, make yourself an exception, and it will be so. No matter how dire a situation is, there is always a positive side to focus on. As you do so, good outcomes will be your portion.

KEY POINT Always lift up your eyes unto the hills.

Open Heavens Devotional: FELLOWSHIP AND FAMINE -Friday 11 February 2011 #RCCG

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shall meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Josh. 1:8)

READ: Acts 13 :1-3

Apart from incomplete obedience and carnality, spiritual famine can also be caused by a neglect of the word. Joshua 1 :8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shall meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Do you know one major reason why God gave this instruction to Joshua was to prevent spiritual famine? According to this scripture, your heart, mouth, deeds and their results are all linked together. If your heart is saturated with God’s Word, it would spill out through your mouth, which would affect your deeds and ultimately determine your destiny. The fellow who has such close contact with the Bible may not be far from receiving from God in the time of need.

However, those who have turned their Bibles into relics and decorations on the book shelf may be inviting spiritual famine. If you spend little or no time with your Bible, you are inviting a spiritual dearth. Do you make time to study your Bible regularly? Closely allied to this is lack of fellowship with other believers. Matthew 18 :20 says God is present where His children are gathered. In such assemblies, He speaks to His children. However, if you are hardly present, how would you hear Him? No matter how busy you are, always create time to be in His presence. Those who are always in His presence never lack divine guidance. In today’s reading, some brethren separated themselves from others to be in God’s presence. They could have pursued other personal agenda during that same period, but they valued being in God’s presence. While worshipping God in praying and fasting, the Lord spoke to them. That was where Paul’s commission to go to the gentiles (Acts 26:16-18) was affirmed. Today, we hear all kinds of excuses for not studying the Bible or attending fellowship meetings. Yet, if these same people were asked to come and receive a sizeable financial favour, they would make the appointment. It only means that divine appointments are not truly important to them. What is important to you will definitely be accommodated within your agenda. How important is attending church services to you?

KEY POINT When Satan gives you excuses to be separated from the Bible or fellowship, be rest assured he is working out something sinister.

Open Heavens Devotional: CHANGEABILITY OF DESTINY – Thursday 10 February 2011 #RCCG

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.” (Prov. 9:11).

READ: Proverbs 9 :10-11

In 1 Samuel 2 :30, God, who had earlier purposed to eternally choose priests from the family of Eli, rescinded His decision. May God not alter His good purposes and plans for your life in Jesus name. One lesson form this is that destiny is changeable. In mathematics, we call this variable constant, which refers to something that is fixed yet subject to change on introduction of a particular factor. An example here is death. Hebrews 9 :27 says everyone has an appointment with death, yet the date of that appointment can be changed – either moved forward or backward. Proverbs 10 :27 says, “The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened”. This means, if God says you will live for 70 years and you fear Him and are wise, you may live up to 80 years or more. In other words, one reason you should be wise is to prolong your life. Hence, Proverbs 9 :11 say, “For by me ( wisdom) thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased”. How wise are you? Do you have the wisdom of God? To what extent is God’s wisdom operating in and through you. In what way is it affecting every area of your life? Wisdom adds life, days and years to you. Wisdom keeps you from taking foolish decisions that can cut down your life- span. If there is any asset you must acquire this year, it is wisdom.

On the other hand, a man’s destiny can be changed backwards. Sin can shorten your life span. Sin is a robber of life. Many who were supposed to live up to 70 , 80 or more years, are dying today at 30 or 40 because they contacted certain diseases through a sinful act. One sexual encounter could be all it takes to infect a vibrant and healthy individual with a killer disease. If you are wise, you will keep away from sin in all its forms. Job 42 :16 says God added 140 years to the life-span of Job. He died at a good old age. He was righteous and wise, and so got more years. Who says you cannot get more from life? With wisdom, you can. By your present lifestyle, will God add to or subtract from your years?

PRAYER POINT Father, help our youths to apply their hearts to wisdom so that they can live long to affect their nation for good. Be wise in your lifestyle choices.

Open Heavens Devotional; START THAT CHAIN Wednesday 9 February 2011 #RCCG

by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “For with the hear man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10).

READ: Romans 10 :13-15

God can use anyone. He does not discriminate. If you yield to Him, you will become a candidate of divine occupation. This year, the Lord will use you mightily in Jesus name. If you can simply obey God’s instructions, you will be dazed at the impact of your obedience. In Kingdom, there is a chain—a powerful network—that God wants sustained until Jesus comes. You are saved to save others. If we do this, by and by, the world will be reached for Christ. A driver once led his female employer to Christ. Thereafter, this lady was miraculously healed of a sickness. In appreciation, she not only led her younger sister to Christ, but also donated a house to start a church in her hometown. Later, she gave out more houses until the RCCG was established in Port-Harcourt. Today, in Rivers State, Nigeria, we have about 1000 parishes, all because a driver witnessed Christ to his boss! Do you know that this driver has, by this singular act, become a spiritual father to many in that state? You may think that he was just fortunate, or lucky, but the truth is, there are several men and women like that woman who can run with the Kingdom vision and support it with all that is required. All God wants you to do is speak up, and He will do the rest. Do not ignore any opportunity you have to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those you meet. You can start your chain today! Open Heavens Devotional: ATTITUDE TO CORRECTION Tuesday 8 February 2011

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: ”Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.” (Prov. 9 :9).

READ: Proverbs 9 :7-9

A part from identifying a wise person by who or what he learns from, he can also be known by his or her attitude to correction. Anyone who cannot be corrected cannot attain wisdom. According to today’s reading, if you find it difficult to love those who correct you, you are a scorner and a fool. A scorner takes offence when corrected, hence, the fellow often plans to revenge by disgracing the one who has corrected him. If that is your attitude towards correction, you are a fool. If people have cause to regret ever correcting you, it is because you are a scorner and a fool. A fool cannot be corrected. Some so-called believers prefer to relocate from their local assembly than to submit to the discipline of their pastor. Such an attitude shows that the fellow has not been truly broken. If your pastor cannot correct you, who else can? Avoiding the correction of your spiritual leader put you at risk in the court of Heaven. It is only a fool that will dodge five strokes of the cane only to later get twenty-four strokes of the rod. What is your attitude to correction? Do you take it with humility or you rebuff it arrogantly? Read more

Open Heavens Devotional: PARTAKING OF THE TREE OF LIFE? – Monday 7 February 2011 #RCCG

By Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” (Rev. 2:7)

READ: Genesis 3 :22-24

A lesson from Christ’s letter to the church at Ephesus is that having an ear is one thing, but hearing with it is another. Some people have ears but they are not better than those who do not have. In fact, there are those who have no ears but they ‘ hear’ because they have an obedient heart and are ready to comply with instructions. What God is looking for as proof of having ears that hear, is your ability to heed what the Holy Spirit is saying. Any time you turn deaf ears to what God wants done, it shows that your ears are useless appendages, mere ornaments even. How functional are your ears? Some ears can hear every other sound except that of the Spirit. May the Lord from today open your ears to hear His voice. Read more

Open Heavens Devotional: PRELIMINARY CALLING Sunday 6 February 2011

by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:” (Gal. 1:16).

READ: Galatians 1 :15-16

Ideally, to qualify for leadership positions in the church of God, you must first be called. Believers are ‘called-out’ people. You are first called out of sin and worldliness into God’s Kingdom. Until you genuinely respond to this preliminary call, you cannot taste the new birth. This makes you unfit to lead God’s people. Today, many who have not yet known the Lord give themselves big titles, claiming that God has commissioned them. The Lord is a Holy God. He will not appoint sinners. Until the problem of sin is settled, that individual remains unusable—his gifts, knowledge and earthly achievements notwithstanding.

“But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:” (Gal. 1:15-16). From the passage above, Paul had Jesus Christ in his heart before he was called to make Him known to the world. You cannot give what you don’t have. Anyone who does not genuinely have a personal relationship with Christ, but is leading God’s people, is not a leader but a hireling. Do you have the Jesus you are preaching to others? Read more

Open Heavens Devotional: GRASSHOPPER MENTALITY Saturday 5 February 2011 #RCCG

W
hat you focus on, in any given situation, determines your outcome. Have you noticed that when you raise your eyes to look at something, you may be staring at several objects at the same time? Twenty people can face the same direction but no two will focus only on the same thing. This shows the need to look aright. May you focus only on what Heaven wants you to see always!

Numbers 13:33 says when the ten spies saw the giants, they saw themselves like grasshoppers. What they saw they eventually became. Although problems will come, never focus on them. Each time you set your heart on a problem, your worth diminishes and your God reduces in magnitude. Each time you focus on a problem, it increases in size and before long, it completely fills your vision. On the other hand, each time you focus on Jesus Christ—the Problem Solver, He is magnified and you become stronger and bolder, while the problem pales into oblivion. This simply tells us that you can either magnify or minimize a problem depending on your focus. What are you focusing on today? Are you daily staring at the problem or is your gaze on the Problem Solver? Read more

Open Heavens Devotional: CARNALITY AND FAMINE Friday 4 February 2011

by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE:”Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Rom. 8:7).

READ: Romans 8:5-8

A possible cause of spiritual dryness in the lives of some people is their refusal to obey God completely. If you cannot see a difference between the Word of God and the words of men, you are not different from King Saul. Anytime there is some iota of disobedience in your attempt at obedience, your overall state is regarded by God as disobedience. If you want Heaven to accept your efforts as acts of righteousness, ensure they satisfy Heaven’s requirement a hundred percent. Read more

Open Heavens Devotional: LOSING DESTINY? Thursday 3 February 2011

by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

MEMORIZE: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Cor. 6: 20).

READ: Luke 22 :31-33

God is the greatest playwright. Unlike human playwrights, His scripts are so all-embracing that one way or another, every human being finds himself or herself fitting into one of the roles or characters. However, one interesting thing about this drama is that God can make changes right on stage. He can change the actor, scene or plot at will. For instance, Psalm 41 :9 prophesied that a bosom friend of the Lord would betray Him. When the time came for that drama to be enacted, and Satan determined to use Peter as the betrayer, the Lord simply referred the matter to the Playwright and it was changed. In any way you were supposed to act a negative part in God’s drama, the Lord will reverse that role in your favour in Jesus name.

“Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed” (1 Sam. 2 :30). In this particular drama, God had assigned Eli and his family to play the role of priests throughout their generations but something went wrong and God changed His mind. Every promise of God has its accompanying conditions. It is foolhardy to violate them and still expect God to fulfil the original promise. Have you lived contrary to God’s command or expectations? Don’t assume you are retained to play your former lead role; it may have changed. Go back to God to find out if you are still relevant. Eli, his sons and their generations once earned a good destiny due to Eli’s past record of faithful service. But lost that glorious destiny and was not given another one. You can either earn or lose a destiny through your deeds. The greatest destiny anyone can have is to fit like a jigsaw puzzle into the Maker’s plan for his or her life. Today, like Eli many have lost their destinies. Have you lost your destiny? Are you retained to play the original role God assigned to you? Go to God and find out. If you have lost it, seek God in repentance, prayer and fasting.

ACTION POINT: To maintain your original role in God’s big play, cooperate with Him completely.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL: GOD’S USE, NO DISCRIMINATION Wednesday, February 2, 2011

by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

Bible in A Year: Neh 4-6

MEMORIZE: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal 3:28)

READ: Galatians 3:26-29

Apart from using the challenged, children and the aged, God does not follow any particular order in choosing who to use in families. He may choose to either use the firstborn or the last born. Samuel was the firstborn of Hannah. Our Lord Jesus Christ was the firstborn of the family of Joseph. Both were mightily used of God. One way to secure the future of your firstborn is to ensure he or she knows Christ and is actively engaged in serving Him. God has special interest in firstborns: so also has satan. Any firstborn that is not engaged in glorifying God will definitely be occupied by the devil. Are you a firstborn? Are you serving the Lord with all your heart? Read more
