North East #Nigeria need Nigerians. My holiday in #Maiduguri by Kayode Ogundamisi (@ogundamisi)

I have been spending some days and nights in Borno and visited a number of places. Today I visited a couple of #IDP camps in and around Maiduguri.

It is a shame that thousands of Children are in a hopeless situation. The conditions in the camps can be better than it is.

The brave men and women who volunteer in the camps are working tirelessly but feel frustrated. I particularly feel ashamed that we are still letting vulnerable Nigerians down.

Whatever you can do as an individual please take time off to visit Borno. Let us defy the insurgents. The people here are friendly, determined and resilient. For every stranger they see, they see hope. I am happy I am spending my holiday here and my hard earned money in Borno State.

Every naira I spend here will contribute to the economy of a neglected people. We are Nigerians. We need to do more for our people.

The Buhari government should send honest; transparent and fair people to take stock and give genuine feedback to eliminate corruption. If we don’t take care of those traumatised children, enclosed in camps some as large as over 19 thousand displaced persons. If we turn our back on them, they will come to hunt us tomorrow.

What can be done? Volunteer with NEMA, Red Cross, Doctors Without Border or any other agencies. Put pressure on the Buhari government and Borno government to do more. Visit Borno if you can, we now have daily flights into #Maiduguri airport. Let us help our own. I am enjoying my stay here and tapping into the strength of the people of Borno who say for all Boko Haram bombs they won’t abandon their homeland.

Regards.

We will trace, recover stolen oil money and prosecute culprits – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu  Buhari Tuesday in the United States vowed that his administration would trace the accounts of individuals who stashed away ill-gotten oil money, freeze and recover the loot and prosecute the culprits.

Reacting to questions from members of Nigerians In Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) in the United States and Canada at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC on the third day of his visit, the President lamented that “Corruption in Nigeria has virtually developed into a culture where honest people are abused.”

According to him, “250,000 barrels per day of Nigerian crude are being stolen and people sell and put the money into individual accounts,” adding that the United States and other developed countries “are helping us to trace such accounts now. We will ask that such accounts be frozen and prosecute the persons. The amount involved is mind-boggling. Some former ministers were selling about one million barrels per day. I assure you that we will trace and repatriate such money and use the documents to prosecute them. A lot of damage has been done to the integrity of Nigeria with individuals and institutions already compromised.”

Citing the example of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), President Buhari said unlike what obtained during his tenure as Federal Commissioner for Petroleum under military regime when the NNPC had only two traceable accounts before paying oil proceeds into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), “now everybody is doing anyhow.”

Ebola: Lagos alerts public, calls for precautionary measures

In the wake of reported cases of the resurgence of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some neigbouring West African countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone, Lagos State Government has again reiterated the need for members of the general public to ensure and maintain adequate personal and environmental hygiene at all times as part of precautionary measures to prevent the recurrence of the disease in the State and the country at large.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Modele Osunkiyesi gave the advice in her office at Alausa, Ikeja while outlining strategies put in place by the State Government to prevent the diseases from recurring in the State after it has certified free of Ebola on the 20th of October 2014 by the World Health Organization.
She stated that Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, is maintaining surveillance through Port Health Services and community surveillance activities in all local government areas.
While noting that that the prevention of Ebola remains a shared responsibility by all citizens, Osunkiyesi stated that although, there has not been any reported case of EVD in the State or the Country, but there is need for residents to take responsibility for their health.
She urged residents to observe the highest possible standards of personal and environmental hygiene through regular washing of hands with soap and running water; avoid close contact with people who are sick; ensure that objects used by the sick are decontaminated and properly disposed and avoid touching or washing of dead bodies if not trained to do so. I never said the President will release ministerial list ‘in a few days’. – Lai Mohammed

My attention has been drawn to a report in a section of the media on Thursday quoting me as saying that President Muhammadu Buhari will release his ministerial list ‘in a few days’.

Lai

This is a distortion of what I told journalists Thursday at Oro, Kwara State, during the 9th Lai Mohammed Ramadan Lecture.

What I said was that the delay in the release of the ministerial list was caused by the unprecedented transition of power from the ruling party to the opposition and the fact that the handover note was not given to the Transition Committee set up by the incoming government until four days to the presidential inauguration.

I then thanked Nigerians for their patience and said the President will release the ministerial list ‘soon’.. There is clearly a difference between ‘in a few days’ and ‘soon’.

Apart from the headline, which has since been corrected by the paper that reported the story, nowhere in the body of the story in question was a direct quote attributed to me as saying the President will release the Ministerial list ‘in a few days’.

Ambode alerts Nigerians to be wary of cyber fraudsters

Akinwunmi AmbodeLagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday alerted the general public on the activities of some impostors impersonating him via various social media platforms with the intention of defrauding unsuspecting citizens.

The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, said some unscrupulous characters are attempting to capitalize on his goodwill to dupe members of the public particularly his associates.

He said he had been inundated with complaints from his associates alerting of the rapid proliferation of his identity in cyberspace under different platforms, especially the social media, with obvious intents to defraud Nigerians.

The Governor said a faceless character who currently operates with the e-mail: a_ambode@yahoo.com is going about soliciting for CVs from his friends and acquaintances for appointments.

He also alerted the public on the multiple identities these faceless persons operate on Facebook with his name and photographs.

The Governor therefore urged Nigerians to disregard entreaties from such persons calling on them to report to the law enforcement agencies to ensure that those behind the nefarious act can be made to face the wrath of the law.

Governor Ambode also assured that efforts will be made to nab those behind the dastardly act.

Olashore bags award for top ten schools in Nigeria

Olashore International School (OIS) has bagged an award for emerging one of the Top Ten schools in Nigeria, and one of the best international schools in Africa. This was stated at the 17th Valedictory ceremony of the school held recently at the school in Osun state.

Graduands in Procession during the ceremony

The Award which was granted by Africa Brands Review, an Integrated Marketing Service Company in Africa, got its ratings from the 2014 WASSCE results. They compared how secondary schools across Nigeria performed and rated the Top 1000 schools in Nigeria, and thus granted the award in June 2015. The events brochure of the Africa TOP 1000 SCHOOLS AWARD is to be distributed to Embassies of various Africa countries and libraries of institutions of higher learning and blues chip companies, including free copies to all participating Schools in Africa. The Plague award which was granted based on standard criteria read ‘2015 Africa Top Schools Award Platinum Category’

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony, the Chairman Board of Trustees, Prince Bimbo Olashore, stated that being honored with the Platinum category award based on standard criteria, and top ten award based on WASSCE results, gives credibility and validation to the efforts of the staff and students in taking the school to its career peak. His words: “Awards are good. When we do things here, we don’t do them for the purpose of awards, but awards are validation of some of the things we stand for. We believe in academic excellence. It’s the bedrock of what the school stands for. About 99.8% of our students get Cs’, while about 92% get As’ and Bs’. To us, this is already excellence. By the time we add other activities such as music, drama, discipline, leadership and the likes, we will be proud of ourselves. We didn’t apply for any award, they just wrote us a letter, and initially we were being skeptical, until they showed us results and proofs, so we agreed with them at least it was from an official source. We emerged one of the best international schools in Africa, but before qualifying for this, we first qualified as one of the top ten schools in Nigeria with 7th position to be specific. Being one of the top ten schools amongst about 11,000 schools sitting for WAEC gives us value to our certificates”.

The Principal also spoke on the award, he pointed out thus; “We’ve been recognized as one of the top ten schools in Nigeria, and this reminds us of our position and how academically successful we are.  We need to let everyone know we do a lot in Olashore and it keeps us out. There’s no school to compare, so if you want sustained academics and all round education, Olashore has it”. Read more

NAFDAC Warns Against Consumption Of Imported Chicken, Turkey and other Poultry Products

PRESS RELEASE:

nafdacAlthough imported chickens and turkeys have become status symbol in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food And Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC) has come out to strongly warned against the consumption of imported or smuggled frozen poultry frozen meat, even as it has said that imported poultry products, especially chicken and turkey have been discovered to be causative factor in non- communicable diseases (NCDs) and antibiotics resistance.

Although NCDs are non-infectious but they are deadly. Health conditions under NCDs include cancer, kidney disease, and hypertension among others.

NAFDAC Director General,Dr Paul Orhii, who gave the warning at media briefing in Lagos, urged Nigerians to avoid imported smuggled chickens and turkeys, because they have been found to contain substances that can predispose one to kidney, liver and lung diseases as well as certain types of cancers and drug resistance- bacterial infections.

At the briefing, a study, titled “Prevalence, Quality and Acceptability of Frozen Poultry Meat in Major Cities in Nigeria” carried out by experts from University of Ibadan titled “, was presented.

Although imported foreign chicken, turkey and along with other frozen poultry meat have been banned by the Federal Government, some Nigerians have cultivated the habit of smuggling the banned poultry products into the country to the ‘delight’ of some Nigerians who do not know the health implications of consuming such products.

Orhii said that patronising smuggled poultry foods do not only encourage economic sabotage, but also can damage peoples’ health.

Orhii added that the studies have found out that most of the smuggled chicken into Nigeria contains high level of various deadly contaminants.

Orhii said: “Our studies have found that most of these smuggled chickens or smuggled poultry products, may be because the way they are transported or because they are not properly packaged, they contain some contaminants.

It can be formaldehyde, at times it can be high level of antibiotics residue and other contaminants like heavy metals. “And that is why we are discouraging members of the public from consuming them.

We are particularly concerned about the high level of antibiotics residue, because these can cause drug resistance, resistance to antibiotics.”

Orhii added that NAFDAC would begin strict enforcement of the ban on imported poultry products. Read more

APC reaches out to aggrieved members after picking candidates for Senate President, House Speaker

APC-LogoThe All Progressives Congress (APC) is reaching out to all its members in the incoming 8th National Assembly who may be aggrieved after the emergence of the party’s official candidates on Saturday.

The party said in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by its National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, that it is natural for some members to be disappointed by the outcome of the straw poll that was conducted to select the party’s official candidates for the post: Senator Ahmed Lawan for Senate President and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for Speaker, House of Representatives.

”However, we must put the interest of our party above personal interests and avoid a situation whereby any other candidates, apart from those picked by the party, will emerge as Senate President and House Speaker on Tuesday.

”Any outstanding issues will be resolved by the party so we won’t go into Tuesday’s election with more than one candidate each for the two posts, Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives,” it said, adding that it would be a shame if, despite its majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, the APC is unable to produce a Senate President and a House Speaker of its choice.

APC explained that its role in the entire business of ensuring a common front within the party ahead of Tuesday’s election is that of an honest broker, saying its goal of ensuring that the party does not go into the election with more than one candidate for each post has now been achieved.

The party appealed to all aggrieved members to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign, in the overall interest of not just the party but the entire nation.
