New Glory Devotional: THE POWER IN YOUR TONGUE 2 – Friday, October 5, 2012

By Pastor Ayo Agbelusi

Memorise: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.” [Eph. 4: 31]

Read: Eph. 4: 29-31

We shall continue today from yesterday’s message on the power in your tongue. It is evident from the text we read yesterday (James 3:1-12) that your tongue, though a little member of your body has enough power to direct your whole life. The rightful use of this member of your body will enhance productivity, progress and success, not only in your life but also in the lives of the people you come in contact with. As a bona fide child of God, it’s therefore expected that you get your words seasoned with grace such that you minister life and not death each time you communicate or respond to issues around you.

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6

You can lead a quiet and peaceable life if you will allow the Holy Spirit to tame your tongue.” But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:8. You need God to be able to speak the right words.  Your marriage can never be heaven on earth if you fail to learn how to turn the usage of your tongue around for good in all modesty and humility. Many homes are in shambles today because of mere exchange of words. Likewise many great relationships have hit the rocks because of the wrong use of words. A lady confessed to me how she missed the love of her life because she couldn’t control her manner of speech during discussions. You should know that what you say with your mouth can never be interpreted the same way by different listeners. Also, once you have spoken, you can never take back what you said. You must therefore be careful when releasing your words so that your intentions will not be misconstrued.

Beloved, it’s time you examine yourself. Do you speak the right words or use foul language? James 3:9-10 says: “Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” You can desire a change today. You can develop the virtue of holy silence. Holy silence produces peace, reconciliation, forgiveness, etc. It doesn’t defend itself, argue, and seek the last word. Moreover it teaches you to bridle your tongue. You won’t need to talk all the time. Must you be known everywhere or speak on every issue? Jesus is the example in this regard. “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” Isa. 53:7.

You can also take this issue of your tongue to God in prayers. David did pray: “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” Ps. 142:3. Until the door of your lips is kept from foul and annoying words, you may not enjoy the desired peace on the earth.  The word of the Lord says: “Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.” Eccl.5:2. The later part of  Eccl.5:3 reads: “a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words.”

Make up your mind to speak the right words at all times. The word of God is the best word ever known. You are either speaking the mind of God or the counsel of the devil. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom. Read more of the scriptures to get a good picture of what is expected of you per time. Don’t allow the word of the Lord to depart from your mouth, mediate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). The more you dwell on His words the better you become as a Christian and with the help of the Holy Spirit, your tongue will begin to produce life and not death. Beloved, as you yield yourself continuously to God, you will forever be a blessing to the generations of the world. Don’t ever forget this: There’s Power in your Tongue.

PRAYER:

Father, help me to yield every member of my body to the control of the Holy Spirit. I refuse to be a victim of the wrong usage of my tongue.
